Японский ракетный флот S-серии – это серия зондирующих ракет, финансируемых Японским агентством аэрокосмических исследований (JAXA), находящаяся в эксплуатации с конца 1960-х годов. Производится компанией IHI Aerospace и эксплуатируется Институтом космических и астронавтических наук (ISAS). В номенклатуре ракет серии S количество букв "S" указывает на число ступеней, а следующее число обозначает диаметр аппарата в миллиметрах. Например, S 310 – это одноступенчатая ракета диаметром 310 мм. 14 января 2017 года ракета SS 520 4 (модифицированная зондирующая ракета) предприняла попытку стать самой легкой и самой маленькой ракетой-носителем для вывода полезной нагрузки на орбиту, однако ракета не смогла достичь орбиты. Вторая попытка была предпринята 3 февраля 2018 года. В этот раз ракета достигла орбиты и успешно вывела на орбиту TRICOM 1R (Tasuki), 3U CubeSat. Запуск в 2018 году сделал её самой маленькой орбитальной ракетой как по массе, так и по высоте.

Выведенная из эксплуатации одноступенчатая японская ракета-зонд. S 160 имела максимальную высоту полета 80 километров, массу при запуске 100 кг, диаметр 160 мм и длину 4 метра. Была запущена 13 раз в период с 1965 по 1972 год.
SS-520-4
Это четвертая конфигурация ракеты-носителя SS 520. Она включает в себя небольшую третью ступень и предназначена для вывода полезной нагрузки на орбитальную скорость более чем , чтобы вывести 3U CubeSat на орбиту с наклонением 31°. Это демонстрация технологии, серийное производство которой не планируется. Запуск был осуществлен 14 января 2017 года, но достичь орбиты не удалось из-за потери телеметрии. Телеметрия была потеряна через 20 секунд после старта. Через 3 минуты полета диспетчеры отправили команду отмены, предписав второй ступени не включаться после разделения, и ракета упала в океан в пределах зоны безопасности.
