Трейнер назван в честь владельца Linwood Mills Дэвида Трейнера-старшего. Поселок Трейнер изначально был частью тауншипа Нижний Чичестер и получил статус боро в 1919 году.

Нефть и порт
Берег реки Делавэр сильно индустриализирован и является продолжением порта Честер. Железнодорожная ветка Стоуни-Крик имеет сортировочную станцию к северу от одноимённого ручья.
