38-я церемония вручения премии «Оскар», отмечавшая лучшие фильмы 1965 года, состоялась 18 апреля 1966 года в Санта-Монике, штат Калифорния. Ведущим был Боб Хоуп, и это была первая церемония «Оскар», транслировавшаяся в прямом эфире в цвете. Самыми успешными фильмами года стали «Звуки музыки» и «Доктор Живаго», каждый из которых получил десять номинаций и пять наград, причем первый удостоился звания «Лучший фильм». Оба фильма входят в десятку самых кассовых фильмов в истории с поправкой на инфляцию, и оба вошли в список Американского института киноискусства величайших американских фильмов XX века. «Звуки музыки» стал первым фильмом, получившим награду «Лучший фильм» без номинации на лучший сценарий со времен «Гамлета» и оставался единственным до «Титаника» на 70-й церемонии вручения премии «Оскар». «Отелло» стал третьим фильмом (из четырех на сегодняшний день), получившим четыре номинации на актерскую игру, но не получившим номинацию на «Лучший фильм». Уильям Уайлер получил свою двенадцатую и последнюю номинацию на «Лучшего режиссера» за фильм «Коллекционер». Церемония не смогла спровоцировать соперничество между Джули Кристи и Джули Эндрюс, двумя британскими претендентками на звание «Лучшей актрисы».
