L'Abergement has an area, as of 2009, of Of this area, or 39.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 55.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 5.7% is settled (buildings or roads). Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. Out of the forested land, 51.0% of the total land area is heavily forested and 4.2% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 19.6% is used for growing crops and 6.2% is pastures and 13.7% is used for alpine pastures. The municipality is located at the foot of the Jura Mountains. It consists of the linear village of L'Abergement and the hamlet of Vailloud.

L'Abergement has a population of as of 2008, 9.5% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years (1999–2009 ) the population has changed at a rate of 10.2%. It has changed at a rate of 4% due to migration and at a rate of 6.2% due to births and deaths. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks French (227 or 96.6%), with German being second most common (5 or 2.1%) and Italian being third (1 or 0.4%). as of 2000, there were 96 people who were single and never married in the municipality. There were 114 married individuals, 14 widows or widowers and 11 individuals who are divorced. as of 2000, there were 82 private households in the municipality, and an average of 2.9 persons per household. In 2000, a total of 80 apartments (82.5% of the total) were permanently occupied, while 16 apartments (16.5%) were seasonally occupied and one apartment was empty.

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SVP which received 44.48% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SP (18.49%), the Green Party (13.74%) and the EDU Party (5.58%). In the federal election, a total of 90 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 54.9%.

as of 2010, L'Abergement had an unemployment rate of 1.7%. as of 2008, there were 25 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 7 businesses involved in this sector. 24 people were employed in the secondary sector and there were 3 businesses in this sector. 7 people were employed in the tertiary sector, with 5 businesses in this sector. In 2000, there were 20 workers who commuted into the municipality and 88 workers who commuted away. The municipality is a net exporter of workers, with about 4.4 workers leaving the municipality for every one entering. Of the working population, 3.5% used public transportation to get to work, and 78.9% used a private car. During the school year, the political district provided pre school care for a total of 578 children of which 359 children (62.1%) received subsidized pre school care. The canton's primary school program requires students to attend for four years. There were 30 students in the municipal primary school program. The obligatory lower secondary school program lasts for six years and there were 19 students in those schools. as of 2000, there were 10 students in L'Abergement who came from another municipality, while 44 residents attended schools outside the municipality.
