Это вечнозеленые кустарники или небольшие деревья высотой 2–13 м, похожие по внешнему виду на лавры рода Laurus, с глянцевыми, кожистыми листьями, и часто ошибочно принимаемые за лавры в садах. Листья супротивные, широколанцетные, длиной 8–25 см и шириной 2–7 см, с несколькими крупными зубцами по краю, ближе к вершине листа. Акубы – двудомные растения, с раздельнополыми мужскими и женскими экземплярами. Цветки мелкие, диаметром 4–8 мм, каждый с четырьмя пурпурно-коричневыми лепестками; 10–30 цветков собраны в рыхлые соцветия-щитки. Плоды – красные костянки диаметром около 1 см.
