Листья расположены очередно и часто меняют форму на одном растении, с более крупными и широкими листьями у основания стебля и меньшими, более узкими листьями выше; край листа может быть цельным или зубчатым (иногда и то, и другое на одном растении). Многие виды содержат белый латекс в листьях и стеблях. Цветки собраны в метелки (иногда одиночные) и имеют пятилопастную короллу, как правило, крупную (2–5 см и более в длину), преимущественно синюю или фиолетовую, иногда белую или розовую. Под короллой 5 чашелистиков, похожих на листья, образуют чашечку. У некоторых видов между каждым чашелистиком имеется небольшой дополнительный листовидный вырост, называемый "придатком", и наличие или отсутствие, относительный размер и ориентация придатка часто используются для различения близкородственных видов.
Родные роды
Классификация некоторых родов семейства Campanulaceae как входящих в состав рода Campanula или являющихся отдельными родами может различаться в зависимости от системы классификации, включая Azorina, Campanulastrum, Canarina, Edraianthus, Musschia, Ostrowskia и Platycodon. Некоторые роды, ранее не выделявшиеся из рода Campanula, в настоящее время выделяются в отдельных системах, включая Annaea, Gadellia и Theodorovia. Hemisphaera ранее рассматривалась как Campanula, подсекция Scapiflorae, а Neocodon – как секция Campanula (Rapunculus).
