The Antarctica Service Medal is considered an award of the United States Armed Forces, issued in the name of the U. S. Department of Defense, and is authorized for wear on active duty uniforms. The medal may also be awarded to U. S. civilians and citizens of foreign nations who participate in a U. S. Antarctic expedition on the continent at the invitation of a participating U. S. agency (for example, National Science Foundation). The Arctic equivalents of the Antarctica Service Medal are the Army Arctic Tab, Navy Arctic Service Ribbon, the Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal and the Air Force Overseas Short Tour Service Ribbon with Arctic "A" Device.

Критерии
Чтобы претендовать на получение медали «За службу в Антарктике», военнослужащие должны пройти подготовку или отслужить десять дней, находясь на континенте Антарктики или на борту судов в антарктических водах, определяемых как район южнее 60 градусов широты. Экипажи воздушных судов, выполняющие транспортные миссии в Антарктику, засчитываются с одним днем службы за каждое выполненное задание в течение 24 часов. Гражданские лица, работающие в научно-исследовательском учреждении или на научно-исследовательском судне, также могут получить медаль «За службу в Антарктике» через Национальный научный фонд, при условии пребывания к югу от 60 градусов широты в общей сложности 10 дней, или 30 дней, если это было до 10 октября 2008 года.
Внешний вид
Награда выдается в виде бронзовой медали диаметром 1 1/4 дюйма. На аверсе изображен полярный пейзаж и стоящая фигура в антарктической одежде, обращенная лицом вперед, между горизонтально расположенными словами "АНТАРКТИКА" слева от фигуры и "СЛУЖБА" справа от фигуры.
Устройства
Для личного состава, выполняющего длительную зимнюю службу в Антарктике, предусмотрено устройство "Зимующий". Плашка "Зимующий" носится только на ленте медали полного размера. Меньший дисковый элемент носится на униформенной ленте для обозначения этой службы. Устройство "Зимующий" вручается для обозначения количества зим, проведенных на континенте Антарктида. Устройство носится в виде диска на ленте награды и изготавливается из бронзы за одну зимовку, из золота за две и из серебра за три и более зимовок. На полноразмерной медали носится планка, изготовленная из металла соответствующей степени, с надписью "Зимующий".
