Gedenkdienst – это концепция осознания и принятия ответственности за самые трагические страницы истории своей страны, желательно при финансовой поддержке государства. Основанный в Австрии в 1992 году Андреасом Мейслингером, Gedenkdienst является альтернативой обязательной военной службе в Австрии и одновременно платформой для австрийских волонтеров, работающих в учреждениях, связанных с Холокостом и еврейской культурой по всему миру, при государственной финансовой поддержке. В Австрии он также известен как Австрийская служба памяти о Холокосте, предоставляемая Австрийской службой за рубежом. Австрийский Gedenkdienst призван сохранять память о преступлениях нацизма, чтить память его жертв и поддерживать развитие еврейской культуры. Программа базируется на признании австрийским правительством ответственности за преступления, совершенные нацистами.
Концепция
Gedenkdienst – это признание, выражение сожаления и принятие ответственности за злодеяния, совершенные страной в прошлом. Gedenkdienst не стремится переложить вину за прошлое на других. Вместо этого он побуждает людей добровольно взять на себя ответственность за зло, совершенное их страной, честно говорить о прошлом своей страны и пытаться исправить прошлые ошибки, создавая основу для улучшения отношений между противоборствующими сторонами. Он направлен на создание платформы для того, чтобы заставило виновных взглянуть на ситуацию глазами жертв. Он также стремится к сохранению памяти о совершенном зле и увековечиванию памяти о его жертвах. Gedenkdienst заключается в поддержке членами стороны, совершившей злодеяния, жизни и культуры тех, кто пострадал. В основе идеи лежит мир, основанный на честности и ответственности за прошлое, посредством воплощения и выражения покаяния. В австрийском обществе Gedenkdienst чтит память о Холокосте и поддерживает еврейскую культуру и жизнь, а также жизни и культуру других групп, ставших жертвами Холокоста. В других странах Gedenkdienst может быть посвящен памяти других злодеяний и их жертв.
Реализация
В 1991 году Андреас Мейслингер получил письмо от министра внутренних дел Франца Лёшнака, в котором его информировали о том, что правительство Австрии разрешило Gedenkdienst в качестве альтернативы гражданской службе. Финансирование будет осуществляться Федеральным министерством внутренних дел.

Ассоциация "Никогда не забывай" с 1994 по 2017 год
Ассоциация предоставила места в 19 мемориальных комплексах в Германии и Польше. Ассоциация "Никогда не забывай" активно участвовала в молодежной работе, направленной на сохранение памяти. Ассоциация прекратила деятельность и была ликвидирована в 2017 году.
Австрийская служба за рубежом с 1998 года (Österreichischer Auslandsdienst)
Андреас Хёртнагль и Андреас Мейслингер основали организацию "Австрийская служба за рубежом" в 1998 году. Эта организация является крупнейшей в Австрии и направляет Auslandsdiener на шесть континентов мира для проведения мероприятий по сохранению памяти о Холокосте, оказания социальных услуг и содействия миру. "Австрийская служба за рубежом" предлагает три вида деятельности: Gedenkdienst, Австрийская социальная служба и Австрийская служба мира. В мае 2023 года Мейслингер покинул пост председателя после критики общественности.
Gedenkdienst с 1992 года
В 1992 году Вальтер Груггенбергер (SPÖ), Андреас Хёртнагл (ÖVP) и Андреас Мейслингер (политически независимый) основали ассоциацию Gedenkdienst. Ассоциация ставила своей целью повышение осведомленности о Холокосте, включая его причины и последствия. Ассоциация отвечает за отбор и поддержку своих волонтеров до, во время и после прохождения службы. Волонтеры имеют возможность подать заявку в одну из организаций-партнеров. Помимо этого, крайне важно понимание роли австрийцев как виновников, жертв и свидетелей. Женщины также имеют возможность проходить годичную службу Gedenkdienst в рамках Европейской волонтерской службы (EVS). Впервые спонсирование женщин-волонтеров было осуществлено в 2008 году фондом "Geschwister Mezei Fond", созданным с целью предоставления женщинам возможности проходить службу Gedenkdienst наравне с гражданскими служащими.
Награда в память о Холокосте
Андреас Мейслингер также инициировал Австрийскую премию памяти жертв Холокоста (AHMA), награждающую людей, которые активно содействуют сохранению памяти о Холокосте. 17 октября 2006 года китайский историк Пан Гуан был удостоен первой премии AHMA. Среди других лауреатов – бразильский журналист Альберто Дайнс, француз Роберт Хебрас, один из шести выживших после резни в Орадуре, и литовский американец, переживший Холокост и сооснователь Музея Холокоста Вирджинии Джей М. Ипсон. В октябре 2010 года Ева Маркс была удостоена премии AHMA австрийским послом Ханнесом Пориасом в Мельбурне.
Почитание
В 2005 году основатель организации Gedenkdienst Андреас Мейслингер получил орден «За заслуги перед Австрийской Республикой» серебряной степени из рук президента Австрии Хайнца Фишера и медаль за заслуги земли Тироль от Гервига ван Стаа и Луиса Дурнвальдера. 8 ноября 2009 года Мейслингер был удостоен премии за жизненные достижения за "десятилетнюю борьбу за официальное признание альтернативной благотворительной службы" на ежегодном гала-ужине Музея Холокоста в Лос-Анджелесе совместно с пережившим Холокост и продюсером фильма «Список Шиндлера» Бранко Лустигом.
